You've spoken highly about the album since it released, and you considered it for past seasons.

You need layers, and this album’s full of them. Once I figured out how powerful the narrative was-that it was this journey to self-discovery and confronting the parts of yourself you typically avoid confronting-I just thought it was a powerful message and one that we all need to hear and understand. Essentially, the more and more I dug, the more and more I found, which is what you need for a podcast like Dissect. Once I got beyond that, I realized Flower Boy was a concept album that contains a very clear, well-executed narrative and a number of thought-out symbols and themes. More specifically, it was the chord progressions and his jazz-inspired harmonies that caught my ear, and later it was the way he uses his instruments orchestrally. I was initially drawn to its production, which Tyler does himself. Why did you want to dissect Flower Boy this season? What about the album lends itself well to a podcast like Dissect?įirst, and perhaps most importantly, it’s a beautiful album. His chord changes alone are among the most interesting I’ve unpacked, regardless of genre, and the way he’s using synthesizers and keyboards like orchestral instruments is really, really cool.” I’m not sure how many people know that, and if they do, I’m not sure they fully know the level he’s composing at now. Revealing the news to Complex, Cuchna says the album's composition gave him a chance to explore music theory more deeply than he has on any other season of Dissect. He explains, “A lot of these songs are so catchy, it’s easy to overlook the uniqueness of what he’s doing. We don’t very often get this trifecta of harmonic complexity, catchy singable melodies, and deep introspection, all wrapped into a single, extremely cohesive album.”Ĭuchna says he hopes the season brings more attention to Tyler’s well-rounded musical gifts. “Perhaps more than a lyricist, I think appreciating him as an artist and storyteller might be most fitting,” he notes. “Tyler is doing it all. So, what's next? Season 4, which premieres April 16 on Spotify, will revolve around Tyler, the Creator's Flower Boy. Each episode, he uses in-depth lyrical and musical analysis to uncover what makes these albums so special. I also just love how everything on this record is real and genuine which many listeners can simply relate to.īest Tracks: Foreword, Where This Flower Blooms, See You Again, Who Dat Boy, Pothole, Garden Shed, Boredom, I Ain’t Got No Time, 911/Mr.In previous seasons of Spotify's popular podcast, Dissect, host Cole Cuchna has put a microscope over iconic albums from Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, and Lauryn Hill. As a much of an influence, Tyler gives on a lot of people he still feels he needs the right people in his life that will love him for him. I love his viewpoints of fame and loneliness on tracks Boredom and 911/Mr Lonely. I love the track Where This Flower Blooms where Tyler basically says this is his best and most mature version of himself, directed by becoming a better artist and a more focused individual. He expresses topics like depression, love, sexuality and personal growth at his highest level.

This is the best project from Tyler the Creator from a lyrical standpoint. His verses always matched the instrumental and also provided great energy on a lot of these tracks especially Boredom and Who Dat Boy. Even with his great singing vocals, his rapping was super focused and watertight. He has always idolized Pharrell and I hear so much Pharrell influences on songs like See You Again and Garden Shed. I was so shocked as Tyler’s singing vocals are actually really really good. When I first listened to this record I actually didn’t know that was Tyler singing on some of these songs. Tyler’s vocals are soooo damn good on this record. Some of my favourite cuts from a production standpoint are Garden Shed and Boredom. Incredible use of synths, some great piano instrumentals and fantastic drums on so many tracks here. He can go from this soft and gentle instrumental that you feel in your heart to a real uplifting, up-tempo instrumental. Production is fantastic on this record from start to end. Flower Boy is the absolute maturation of Tyler the Creator, a truly talented artist reaching his full potential.
